Application and recruitment process

Here is a quick step by step guide on what to expect when applying for a role with WorkSafe New Zealand.

To apply for any WorkSafe job, you will first need to register(external link)


Once you’ve registered with us, you can begin to apply for jobs. Simply fill out the relevant online application form for the role you want to apply for.

Remember to have your cover letter and CV ready, as you will need to attach these to your application. 

To be eligible to work at WorkSafe you must meet New Zealand or Australian residency or citizenship requirements.

Finding out if you’ve been shortlisted

If we require further information to support your application we will be in touch, otherwise we will contact you once short-listing has been completed. This is typically within two weeks after the closing date of the vacancy – please refer to the job advertisement for details of the closing date. 

Panel interview

If you’re shortlisted, you’ll be invited to a panel interview.

This is an opportunity for us to get to know you and for you to learn more about us and the role you’ve applied for.

You will most likely be asked behavioural based questions on the key competencies required for the role.

In some cases, we may ask you to attend a second panel interview to further assess your suitability for the role. 

Psychometric assessment

For some roles we may ask you to complete psychometric tests. These tests can be used to measure verbal, numerical and/or abstract reasoning, or personality characteristics.

Reference checks

After the interview and any testing, if you are our preferred candidate, we’ll ask for the names of two referees to contact for a confidential reference. These referees should ideally be two former managers who you directly reported to.

Please ensure these people have agreed to be your referees before giving us their details.

Security clearance information and other relevant checks

All WorkSafe appointees must have a satisfactory criminal conviction check. Depending on the role, we may also ask you to complete other checks such as credit and medical checks, qualification vetting and checking of international candidates. 

Formal job offer

If you’re our preferred candidate, and everything else checks out, we’ll make you a formal offer by sending you a written contract to sign. Congratulations and welcome to WorkSafe.
