Briefing to the Incoming Minister

Maruiti 2027

Maruiti was established as a time‑bound, learning‑oriented collaboration. Its purpose was to test whether deeper partnership could materially improve health and safety outcomes.

Valuable insights were generated, but Māori fatality rates remain unacceptably high, particularly in high‑risk work settings. We will absorb what we learned into our future intervention design work programme to improve overall health and safety performance at work for all New Zealanders, including Māori and Pasifika workers.

Te Kete Maruiti – WorkSafe's cultural Māori app

WorkSafe has used innovative technology to develop WorkSafe’s own Te Ao Māori digital app 'Te Kete Maruiti' (Basket of knowledge).

Features of the app include:

  • pronunciation
  • maps with Māori names and tribal groups
  • values and principles
  • mihimihi/pepeha
  • whakatauākī/proverbs
  • greetings, farewells
  • waiata
  • WorkSafe’s own haka.

The technology is customised and designed for WorkSafe staff to build confidence when engaging with the Māori community on a day to day basis through their roles as senior leaders, manager's and operational staff.

The app is publically available for download. Search for Te Kete Maruiti in the Apple(external link) or Google Play(external link) store.
