Notifications made through our online form won't be monitored between 12pm on Tuesday 24 December 2024 and 8.30am on Monday 6 January 2025.

Prior to being offered for sale in New Zealand, any household (or similar) appliances that are within the following definitions are subject to a Supplier Declaration of Conformity.
Appliances for household use and similar purposes, their rated voltage being not more than 250 V for single-phase appliances and 480 V for other appliances.
The scope of household or similar appliances used for declared articles does not include appliances not intended for normal household use but which nevertheless may be a source of danger to the public, such as appliances intended to be used by laymen in shops, in light industry and on farms.
Definition of household appliances
An electrical appliance which—
- is for the application of heat to a bed;
- is flexible;
- has a fabric enclosure; and
- has a projected surface area exceeding 0.6m2;
and includes—
- any associated power supply or controller.
An electrical appliance which—
is a household type; and
is for toasting bread or similar foods.
An electrical appliance which—
- is a household type; and
- is for drying textile material.
An electrical appliance which—
- is a household type;
- is for cooking or warming food by electrical energy; and
- is portable.
An electrical appliance which—
- is a household type; and
- is for washing of eating and cooking utensils.
An electrical appliance which—
- is a household type;
- has a primary function of moving air in its vicinity;
- is self-contained;
and includes—
- any associated ancillary equipment.
An electrical appliance which regulates and controls the supply of electrical energy to an electric fence.
An electrical appliance which—
- is for application of heat to parts of the human body;
- is in the form of a flexible pad; and
- has a projected area not exceeding 0.6m2.
An electrical appliance which—
- is a household type or a commercial hand-held type; and
- is for drying, styling or the caring of human hair;
but does not include—
- a razor or hair clippers
An electrical appliance which—
- is for trimming hedges; and
- is hand held.
An electrical appliance which—
- is a household type;
- is for heating liquid in which it may be immersed; and
- is self-contained;
and includes—
- aquarium type immersion heaters.
An electrical appliance which—
- is a household type; and
- kills insects by the application of electrical energy.
An electrical appliance which—
- is a household type;
- is for smoothing or pressing fabric by the application of heat or steam; and
- is hand held except for any separate steam generator;
and includes—
- any associated equipment.
An electrical appliance which—
- is a household type; and
- is for the preparation of food by mechanical means; or
- is for opening cans; or
- is for sharpening knives.
An electrical appliance which—
- is a household type; and
- is for cutting grass or lawn.
An electrical appliance which—
- is a household type;
- is portable;
- has a capacity not exceeding 10L; and
- heats liquid for—
- humidifying room air; or
- use in, or as, a hot beverage; or
- cooking.
An electrical appliance which—
- is a household type;
- is for massaging the human body;
- is portable; and
- is self-contained.
An electrical appliance which—
- is a household type; and
- applies heat to food, liquid or other substances in a chamber by means of high frequency electromagnetic radiation.
An electrical appliance which—
- is a household type;
- is for cooking food using heat produced by electrical energy; and
- is stationary.
An electrical appliance which—
- is a household type;
- collects and /or filters air; and
- is for installation above a cooking appliance.
An electrical appliance which—
- is a household type; and
- shaves, cuts or trims human hair.
An electrical appliance which—
- is a household type; and
- cools and stores food.
An electrical appliance which—
- is a household type; and
- is for heating, by electrical energy, the atmosphere for comfort purposesÂ
including—
- a fitting intended to provide a combination of illumination and heating or ventilation, or both, and having a combined rating up to and including 1.5kW;
 but does not include—
- an air-conditioning appliance;
- a heating system that is intended to heat the atmosphere of a room primarily by raising the temperature of any floor, wall, or ceiling area; or
- an under-carpet heating system.
An electrical appliance which—
- is a household type; and
- is for stitching fabric or other material.
An electrical appliance which—
- is for the application or removal of solder; and
- is hand held;
and includes—
- any integral or associated power supply or controller;
but does not include—
- a soldering iron promoted exclusively to industry.
An electrical appliance or device –
- that is a transportable spa pool, transportable spa bath;
- that is for circulating air or water in a conventional bath; or
- that is for use in the operation or cleaning of a swimming pool, non-transportable spa pool or non-transportable spa-bath
 but does not include –
- an appliance or device exclusively promoted for commercial use; or
- a heat pumpÂ
An electrical appliance which—
- is a household type; and
- produces ultraviolet or infra-red radiation for personal, therapeutic or cosmetic purposes; and
- is portable.
An electrical appliance which—
- is a household type;
- is portable; and
- removes dust, dirt or moisture and the like from floor coverings by suction; or
- removes garden refuse from lawns or paths and the like by suction.
An electrical appliance which—
- is a household type; and
- is intended for washing clothes and other textile materials.
An electrical appliance which—
- is for installation under a water bed envelope; and
- heats water contained in that envelope;
- and includes—
- any associated control device.
An electrical appliance which—
- is for heating and storage of water for bathing, washing, or similar purposes;
- incorporates a heating element;
- is unvented; and
- has a storage capacity not less than 4.5L nor more than 680L;
OR
- is for heating water;
- is of the instantaneous type; and
- incorporates live parts in contact with water
Product limitations for Household and similar appliances
Class 0 and 01 appliances are not permitted in New Zealand.
