Summer is a great time to get out in the sunshine and work in the outdoors. But if you’re planning on doing any excavation or digging work you should always follow safe digging practices.

Always check before you dig.

The most common types of pipe or cable you would find in your backyard are electricity cables, gas pipes, water and waste pipes, or telecommunications cables.

Before you dig you should always:

  • Check plans through your local council and gas and electrical companies.
  • Use a cable locator – get these at electrical equipment suppliers – or hire a contractor.

Damage to gas pipes can cause escapes which may lead to fires or explosions if an ignition source is present.

Damage to electricity cables can lead to arcing currents and fire.
